Past Continuous

Uses

We use the Past Simple to talk about:

  • activities that continued for some time in the past:

He was watching TV all evening.

  • activities that form a background for some events:

It was raining during the whole match.

When the Past Continuous and the Past Simple appear in one sentence, the Past Continuous describes the background, and the Past Simple reports an event.

I was sailing in middle of the sea when storm began.

    Form

Past Continuous is formed in this way:

[subject] + was/were + [verb with -ing ending]
